Ribnica - Kruševo

Obrovac

Obrovac is an old historic town situated 11 km upstream from the mouth of the River Zrmanja in the Novigrad Sea. 

Obrovac is situated on the extension of the limestone Canyon, where it crosses the River Zrmanja to Zadar. From the Mali Alan (1045 m), north of Obrovac, offers a breathtaking view of the Straight districts and the Zadar archipelago.

Very impressive is Canyon of River Zrmanja from Obrovac to her mouth, with very steep cliffs in some places even up to 200 m altitude.

Obrovac in history was an important Roman settlement called Clambetae (now Cvijina Gradina, about 3 km southwest of Obrovac). Parts of the urban centers of the ancient settlement with the remains of city streets and structures are still visible.

The most important are the remains of a Roman temple and the remains of the thermal content. 

Obrovac is first mentioned in sources of Croatian rulers called Obrovez. Until 1527th it was part of the possessions of the Counts of Krbava and subsequently came under Turkish rule. 1684th was taken by Venice. Above the town are the ruins of a fortified city, enlarged and strengthened by the dukes of Krbava, and then the Turk and the Venetian.

The main attractions of Obrovac are beautiful, picturesque Canyon of the River Zrmanja, a rich native cuisine (lamb, ham, wine), rafting and fishing in the area, as well as many cultural and historical monuments along the River Zrmanja.

Novigrad

Novigrad is a picturesque town located on the southern shores of the Novigrad sea at the foot of the Velebit mountain, in a deep cove whose steep sides are covered with pine trees.

Novigrad has been continually inhabited since prehistoric times. The oldest part of town, a historic town located on the north side of the bay on the slope of a hill under the fortification Fortress, surrounded by walls. Roman fort whose foundation is Illyrian (Liburnian) hill in the 13th century was reconstructed and named after the Latin Castrum Novum, Croatian Novigrad.

In 976 Novigrad destroyed the Benedictine monastery and St. Paul's Church. According to the records of 1879, most probably they were at the site of today's church of St. Catherine.

The historical core of the town took a trapezoid shape, with eastern and western side walls which are descending from the fortification towards the sea where the two walls joined to the third, the southern wall that ran parallel to the shores of Novigrad port. The walls were set with nine towers.

In the late 17th c. release of the wider area of Novigrad from the Turks degradation of the walls towards the sea.

The west wall can only be found in traces today, while the eastern wall is well preserved, though in one part of it it is attached to buildings. During the 20th century outside the city walls, new settlements have been developed in the east of Jaz and in the western Zagrad.
